August 15, or Dekapentavgoustos in Greece


   It is true that Greeks are closely tied to the celebration of The Virgin on the 15th of August every year. It is the most important single day holiday in Greece because it is the day that honors the holliest of all, The Virgin “Panagia” which in greek means just that the “holliest”

  Every location in Greece has a Virgin it celebrates and in some places such as the islands of Paros and Tinos as well as the mountain of Vermion in northern Greece, this celebration becomes the focal attraction for thousands of visitors from all over the world. In those places the holiday is  three days involving a holy procession of the Virgin, special prayers and culminates to a local traditional foods offering in the central town squares for all guests, followed by local dances. This event is a unique cultural event in Greece that brings all Greeks and visitors closer together and back to the rich roots of the Greek culture.
